Writer Wednesday: Meet Susan Mary Malone

Susan Mary MaloneWelcome back to Writer Wednesday, my favorite day of the week.

Today, we take a break from the romance writing world to welcome Susan Mary Malone, author of literary fiction and editor of numerous works.

I hope you enjoy this chance to get to know Susan and her work a little bit better!

Old ManWhat inspires you to write?

Just about everything, really. I can see a bent, elderly man shuffling with a cane, and my imagination runs to:

  • What was his life like when young, strong, and in full vigor?
  • Did someone love him once?
  • Does someone still?

And then a fictional world comes to life.

Which type of genre do you love most, and why?

Literary Fiction, for sure. It’s what I love to read, and what I write. It’s the stuff about what makes people tick, making some sort of sense (however chaotic) of this crazy experience we call life.

writingName one interesting thing you learned in researching/writing your last book:

My latest novel is a myth within a myth. As Paula listens to that myth told on the rickety otherworldliness of Diana’s porch (who is known as the white witch of Sociable), she first thinks it’s silly.

But the story of Vasalisa won’t leave her, and weaves through the plot, as Paula begins to understand the essence of it—that true guidance via the intuition lives within all of us.

politicName two things people don’t know about you:

1) I’m actually quite an introvert. Even though I’m often speaking or out doing authorly things (I gave the keynote at the East Texas Writers Conference in April 2016), I have to watch for not just staying home with my dogs all the time!

2) I’m a true Poly wonk. I love, love, love the study of politics. It contains within it who we are as a people. This is so deeply ingrained in me that my ideal date would be with Chuck Todd! (Apologies to his wife.) But what a fabulous thing to sit down with him of an evening and ask, “What did you learn today, honey?”

What fellow literary fiction author do you recommend reading, and why?

Oh, dear—do I have to narrow it to one? Lol. Okay, if forced . . . I’d have to say Norman Maclean. Truer, deeper, more beautiful prose I have never known.

And good to note that he taught college literature for decades before penning A River Runs Through It (he was in his 70s when it was published).

Writing to such a level takes a long, long time . . .

TypewriterWhat one piece of advice do you wish you’d had when first starting out?

That would circle back to the previous question. All writers tend to want success to be quick, painless (laughing here!); the genius within us recognized early on.

But again, I’ve never read more beautiful prose than Maclean’s—which took decades and decades to perfect.

Settle in. Keep working on your craft. No matter what.

What’s your favorite novel of all time, and why?

A River Runs Through It, in such a tiny span of space, goes straight to the depths of what love means to us, of how we can love people without understanding them. And does it in the most breathtaking language . . .

justdanceA Bit on I Just Came here to Dance:

Paula Anne Fairbanks understands all about the unexamined life. And she likes hers that way—until her world gets ripped smooth apart.

Running from reality, Paula falls under the mythological yarns being spun on Diana Maclean’s porch. Surely Paula’s own choices aren’t to blame for the summer of insanity she spends under the spells of Diana…who is, after all, known as the White Witch of Sociable, Texas.

I Just Came Here to Dance, a modern allegory, waltzes atop the line between the creative and the crazy, the sacred and the maligned. Through myths it weaves together the multi-layers of personal Self with that of the collective whole. And finally, Paula Anne and the townsfolk learn the simplest of truths: that the fire’s ashes produce wisdom and courage, just as the stories say.

Retriever puppy

A Bit on Susan:

Texas native Susan Mary Malone has published two novels, co-authored four nonfiction books, and written many short stories.

Her happiness is fiction, wine, and Labrador Retrievers, the latter of which she raises, trains, and shows. Literature is her love.

In addition to writing, she edits; fifty-plus Malone-edited books have sold to traditional publishers, and one of them was made into a Hallmark Hall of Fame film (while another is in production).

Her stories revolve around the passions and purpose, the myths and meaning of women’s lives. Which often involves wine. She does, however, try to keep the Labradors out of that.

Writer Wednesday: Meet Kathleen Mix!

Kathleen MixHeya hiya hoya, it’s Wednesday! #WriterWednesday, that is, and we’ve got Virginia Romance Writer and romantic suspense author Kathleen Mix with us, talking romance and more!

I have the pleasure of having met Kathleen several times in person, and she’s delightful.

*She* might keep in you in suspense, but I won’t – read on and learn more about Kathleen and her work!

sinsWhat inspires you to write?

The people in my stories are my biggest inspiration, To me, they’re not just characters in a fantasy, but real. And, I need to know how they’ll react when life throws obstacles into their path. Most of all, I want to know they’ll be all right.

Which type of romance do you love most, and why?

I write romantic suspense because the genre contains what I want to read. I enjoy stories where the internal and external problems facing the hero and heroine combine to make getting together seem unlikely. The excitement of the physical danger enhances the romance.

Secret StrangerWhat fellow romance author do you recommend reading, and why?

I know you want one author, but with so many excellent ones to choose from I’m going to stretch my answer to two. I am a big fan of Roxanne St. Claire because she grabs my emotions.

And I never miss a book by Jennifer Crusie. She can somehow combine perfect characters, great conflicts, and flawless structure into a story any romance author would be well to emulate.

Beyond ParadiseWhat one piece of advice do you wish you’d had when first starting out?

I wish I had known that the journey only begins with the first sale. The hard work of finding new ideas and trying to make your next book better than the last is never over.

There is no silver bullet. Authors need to prepare for the long haul. Those who love the work wouldn’t have it any other way.

ImpossibleRansom500A Bit About Impossible Ransom (from Entangled Select Suspense):

The one man she hates is the only one who can save her…

Working as part of a yacht crew sounded like the perfect escape for senator’s daughter Val Ferrell. Glorious Caribbean beaches, turquoise seas, and freedom from her overbearing father? Heaven. But when the ship is hijacked by violent men—who want to use Val to get to her father—Val’s fantasy turns into a nightmare. Now her only hope is the ship’s captain, who happens to be her ex-lover.

After disobeying an order, covert operative Nick O’Shea’s been assigned yacht captain duty. Working side-by-side with the tiny blonde who makes him crazy—and keeping his hands off her—was definitely punishment. But when Val’s life is endangered, Nick must choose between staying aboard and fighting to retake the boat or risking their lives by attempting an escape to an isolated Caribbean island. With the ransom deadline rapidly approaching, he’s running out of time…

writingA Bit About Kathleen:

Kathleen Mix is a multi-published author of romance and romantic suspense.

Years ago, she escaped the structured life of a computer nerd and database administrator and moved aboard her sailboat with her husband and a reluctant Sheltie. They headed south to the Caribbean, and she wrote non-fiction travel and sailing articles. But since she was sailing under starlit skies and walking on the world’s most beautiful white-sand beaches, her thoughts soon turned to romance and suspense. She started writing fiction while anchored in the Virgin Islands, and the rest, as they say, is now history.

Currently, Kathleen lives in Virginia. For book excerpts and pictures of her boat visit www.kathleenmix.com.

COVER REVEAL: A Scandalous Matter – Preorder Today!

Cover to A Scandalous Matter

Here it is, the cover for A Scandalous Matter. What do you think?
I’m in love with it, and so grateful to Joy from Lankshear Design.

And here’s the current blurb:

A Scandalous Matter

The past is always present.

Independent, spirited Amara Mattersley may live under the shadow of scandal, but at least the Regency society judging her is familiar, if not exactly beloved. That’s all about to change when this nineteenth-century duke’s sister finds herself in twenty-first-century Charlottesville, Virginia–and locking horns with one very befuddling, very male, UVa professor.

Computer science professor Matthew Goodson has no time for love–no time for anything, actually, but his quest for tenure and his obsession with the screen. The last thing he expects is to get side-swiped by this adorably odd British miss. Yet something in her calls to him, pulls at him, in a way unknown — and uncomfortable.

Can this odd couple blend the past and the present into a mutual future? Or will old wounds and new complications sabotage any chance at a twenty-first century happily ever after?

Wanna preorder the Kindle version? Find it on Amazon. Paperbacks will also be available on release day: July 6, 2016.

Thank you so much for your continued support! I’m excited and nervous and all of that good stuff, but, oh, do I hope you love Amara and Matt’s story!

Writer Wednesday: Meet Marliss Melton

Marliss MeltonIt’s with great pleasure and pride I bring you Marliss Melton as our guest today on #WriterWednesday. Marliss is a fellow romance-writing Virginian (specializing in military romance), whom I was privileged to meet in person at the Charlottesville Festival of the Book in March – and she definitely impressed me with her explanations of how thoroughly she crafts her characters (Myers-Briggs and other personality guides play a large role!). She writes some seriously kick-ass heroes and heroines, y’all.

I hope you enjoy this chance to get to know Marliss and her work a little better – and feel free to show her some love in the comments!

What inspires you to write?

Navy SEAL medal and dog tags.

Reading biographies and autobiographies written by U.S. Navy SEALs inspires me to write military romantic suspense.

Books like LONE SURVIVOR, SERVICE, AMERICAN SNIPER, and THE INTUITIVE WARRIOR have not only familiarized me with military tactics and jargon but they’ve given rise to my fictional heroes.

Back 2005, before LONE SURVIVOR was ever released, I had read a newspaper article about the sole surviving SEAL of an operation-gone-wrong, and that article alone inspired my fictional account of such a SEAL. NEXT TO DIE was published two years later, the same month and year as LONE SURVIVOR, by the same umbrella publisher! I was honored to present the real SEAL with a copy of my book, and Marcus Luttrell signed copy of his book for me!

Which type of romance do you love most and why?

Man in military uniformIt’s got to be obvious that I love military romance. There’s just something about a man in uniform—especially one who can run longer, swim deeper, and kill a bad guy a hundred different ways.

Having grown up in the military environment and married both an Army officer and a Navy man, I understand what it takes to commit to a man who risks his life for the sake of his country.

But I bet you didn’t know that I also write medieval historical romance. The precursors to Navy SEALs were the warriors of old, so I’m also quite content reading sweeping historical romances set in the Middle Ages.

Name one interesting thing you learned in researching/writing your last book.

Cover of Intuitive WarriorMy upcoming release, FRIENDLY FIRE, debuting May 13, 2016, was inspired by the autobiography THE INTUITIVE WARRIOR, by Michael Jaco.

I was astonished to discover that Navy SEALs have adopted a special skill used by American Indians called “remote viewing.” This skill involves tapping into one’s intuition in order to envision with accuracy the path on which one travels. SEALs, of course, want to develop this skill in order to avoid walking into an enemy ambush.

Michael Jaco has refined his intuitive abilities to such a degree that he can “see” miles ahead of his location, as well as sense an imminent terror attack in time to avoid or disrupt it. How cool is that? It’s no wonder he inspired my upcoming hero of FRIENDLY FIRE.

Cover of Friendly FireA Bit on FRIENDLY FIRE (coming May 13, 2016):

Boarding a cruise ship bound for Mexico, Jeremiah “Bullfrog” Winters is struck by a terrifying premonition. At the same time, he runs into the only woman he has ever loved and lost.

Emma Albright might still teach Romantic Lit, but life has taught her there’s no such thing as everlasting love. While she made a promise to enjoy her vacation, she has no intention of falling for the younger man who captivated her years earlier.

Persuading Emma to love again becomes Jeremiah’s newest mission. But when violence disrupts their magical vacation, wooing her takes a back seat to survival. Love may be the only weapon powerful enough to save them, if only Emma can bring herself to believe in it.

A Bit on Marliss:

Pen in handMarliss Melton is the author of two very disparate genres—medieval historical romance and military romantic suspense. Yet she creates in both a common theme: Men of Valor, Women of Strength.

Daughter of a U.S. foreign officer, Marliss grew up in various countries overseas. Exposure to different languages led her to teach high school English, Spanish, and—her favorite subject—History of the English Language which she taught at the College of William and Mary, her alma mater.

Marrying into the military, Marliss Melton’s love of British history existed side-by-side with her appreciation for the selfless sacrifices of the military community. With many contacts in the military and Intelligence communities, she was well-equipped to write realistic romantic suspense featuring U.S. Navy SEALs and agency heroes.

Marliss resides in Williamsburg, Virginia with her husband and their youngest daughter. Be sure to “friend” her on Facebook! Visit www.marlissmelton.com for more information.

Thank you so much for giving us some of your time today, Marliss! It was a pleasure.
