Update: I’m Not Here. AFK. MIA. AWOL. Etc

I'll be back

Hey all,

Just a quick note:

I haven’t been around on social media much. It’s not because I don’t love you. It’s because I’ve got a lot of stuff going on in my personal life, including my beloved mom being in the hospital.

Please forgive me. I’ll be back as soon as I can, but for now, I am, as my son says, largely AFK – away from keyboard.

And as the Breakfast Club / Simple minds decreed, “Don’t You Forget About Me.”

Because as Arnold said, “I’ll be baahck.”

On Finding Balance Between Career and Personal Life

portrait of young gymnasts training in the stadiumI didn’t get to see the US women’s team compete on the balance beam in the Rio Olympics. But if I had, I would’ve oohed and aahed at the astounding physical prowess that allows those female athletes to twist and contort their bodies all over the place – while staying on a four-inch-wide beam.

How do they do it? Practice, practice, practice. Raw talent and skill. But mostly practice, practice, practice.

And when they practice, they fall down. They make mistakes. They bobble and wiggle, maybe even flail their arms or miss a dismount. But they get back up and keep going, absolutely determined they can and will do better the next time.

I admire that conviction, that perseverance, that dedication to finding balance.

Balance has been missing in my life this past year. I’ve launched myself into this fantastic, brilliant, beautiful, overwhelming, competitive, uncertain world of romance writing. Well, specifically romance publishing. I love it. I truly do.

Open book with bar graphs laid out on a red background

But in my quest to meet the expectations and requirements “they” say one must do to be successful (publish as much as possible as quickly as possible, be active across social media, write newsletters, go to conferences and signings, guest blog, etc), I lost my balance in other areas of my life.

This doesn’t surprise me. I’d be the first to fall off that beam and land on my head. I’m rather all-or-nothing in my general personality and love to throw myself into new projects and new adventures. Which is fine, until I realize there’s stuff I’ve left behind as I set off on my new quest. Important stuff.

How do you do it, fellow authors? Fellow human beings? How do you find balance and manage to get everything done without ignoring your spouse, your kids, your home, your health?

What I’ve come to realize over the last month is I need to pick a simpler routine, so I don’t fall on my tush and disregard the ones I love most. And disregard myself.

If only my own toenails were that pretty...

See, I’m a stress eater. An emotional eater. I’ve got serious food issues. And over the course of writing, editing, and publishing A Scandalous Matter, I put on twenty-five pounds.

Dang it.

This was and is a clear sign I don’t have things in balance. (As is the state of my house, but let’s not go there…)

If I could, I would spend all my time writing and reading and editing and especially learning about marketing and publicity and connecting with readers and doing everything I can to be the best indie author I can be. Because it’s fun. And I have spent my time that way. Well, more the latter things, because writing and editing are hard, y’all.

But I have a husband who loves me and wants some attention, kids who still need me and deserve my attention, and a body that IS me and requires more movement and care than I’ve been giving it.

This is not to say I’m quitting. No way. I’m finally doing what I feel in my bones is what I was meant to do: write romance.

Slow Down sign with clouds and sky backgroundBut I have to slow down, change things up, accept that I can’t do everything I want to do when I want to do it. Being an author is easily a full-time job and more. But I don’t have full time to give it. Not at this stage in my life, when I’m still mom and chef and taxi driver and school volunteer and Girl Scout parent, etc., etc.

In addition to limited time, I also have limited energy. (Those twenty five pounds on top of all the rest might be influencing that, but frankly I’ve always had less physical energy than many I know…)

So I’m accepting that and relaxing my schedule.

I’d love to have a new book out every six months, but it might be that nine months to a year is more realistic. That means I’ll miss out. I won’t hit the right beats in the coveted Amazon algorithm. Some readers may not be satisfied and may move on because I don’t produce quickly enough. I guess I might lose potentially higher income from having more books on the market.

So be it.

ASMPreOrderAdI hope you’ll stick with me and support me and read my books and engage with me online, because that’s what I love – interacting with readers and writers and just talking about the glory that is language and writing and stories and words.

In the meantime, I’ll go back to editing The Demon Duke (Grace Mattersley’s story) and planning out storylines for The Legendary Duke and The Boy Next Door (Taylor Goodson’s story) and A Delicate Matter (Sophie Mattersley’s story) and whatever else pops into my head.

Female legs jogging on a trailBut I’m no Olympic gymnast. I’m no gymnast, period. So while others authors manage to dazzle you with their speed, I’ll just be over here, trying to stay on the silly bar. One foot in front of the other.

Speaking of which, one foot in front of the other is exactly what I need to do to get some of this Book Baby weight back off, too. So excuse me while I put on my walking shoes and head out the door…

Writer Wednesday: Meet Rebecca Hunter!

Rebecca HunterIt’s Writer Wednesday! I was going to try to come up with a brilliant introduction for today’s guest, Rebecca Hunter, but she did it for me. Take it away, Rebecca!:

Hi and thanks for welcoming me onto your Writer Wednesdays, Margaret! I’m Rebecca Hunter, author of the Stockholm Diaries contemporary romance series, and I’m excited to be here. I met Margaret at a multi-author event, and I’m so excited about her fun Magic of Love series!

[ML: And I’m so thankful to Rebecca for helping me celebrate the release of A Scandalous Matter! The girl knows how to party.]

Margaret sent me a few questions about my author life that I hope you enjoy reading!

Panorama of Stockholm, Sweden

What inspires you to write?

My husband is Swedish, and we have lived in Sweden twice. Both times, I met women from around the world with interesting stories about meeting Swedish men and moving to Sweden. These stories involved chance meetings, uncertain risks and sacrifice, all in the name of love. The whole Stockholm Diaries series is a kind of tribute to all these stories.

Mystery Books with Deerstalker Cap, Magnifier, Pipe and Pocket Watch - path included

Name one interesting thing you learned when researching/writing your last book:

I have a sort of love/hate relationship with mysteries. I love puzzling them together, but I hate the element of violence in most plots, even if it’s in the background like in cozy mysteries – it’s almost worse for me if death isn’t taken seriously. But the last book I completed was a reworking of my very first book, a mystery/intrigue romance set on the shores of Lake Huron. As I wrote the book, I found that I actually enjoyed the darker sides of mysteries if I can stay away from killing. If a publisher picks it up, I’ll find myself writing another one of these soon!

lostlivingWhat fellow romance author do you recommend reading and why?

If you’re into hot contemporary romance, I’d highly recommend Cara McKenna. She does an amazing job with a lot of the character types that we see in hot romance today, particularly the underground fighter. I also just read a wonderful tribute to Daphne DuMaurier’s Rebecca by Simone St. James called Lost Among the Living. It’s so skillfully done that it surpasses its model, in this reader’s opinion!

stockholmdiariesA Bit About Stockholm Diaries, Caroline

While Niklas’s darker side draws her to him, she knows the sensible decision is to move on from Stockholm before she gets too attached. Her time in Stockholm is running out. She must choose between what is safe and what her heart tells her is right. Is she strong enough to take the risk?

And don’t miss Rebecca’s most recent release in the multi-author box set, Twenty Times Tempted: A Sexy Contemporary Romance Collection!

writingA Bit About Rebecca:

Rebecca writes sensual, emotional adventures of the heart. She is a writer, editor and translator who has always loved to read and travel. Though she earned a Bachelor’s in English and a Master’s in English Education, most of what she learned about writing romance has come from other sources.

Rebecca has, over the years, called many places home, including Michigan, where she grew up, New York City, San Francisco, and, of course, Stockholm, Sweden. After their most recent move from Sweden back to the San Francisco Bay Area, she and her husband assured each other they’ll never move again. Well, probably not.

Thanks so much for being here, Rebecca! I loved hearing what you had to share.

Writer Wednesday: Meet Catherine Chant!

Welcome to Writer Wednesday!

Today we’ve got Catherine Chant rockin’ the house – which is especially apt, considering she writes rock ‘n’ roll romantic fiction and stories with paranormal twists for young adults. How cool is THAT?

Read on to learn more about Catherine and her latest work – and I hope you’ll leave some love in the comments. Because authors need groupies, too! 🙂

Red heart shapes on a handwritten old journal.

What inspires you to write?

I think I’m going to be in the minority when I say I’m not the type of writer who feels she has to write (like that I’ll die if I couldn’t). I’m creative in so many different ways that if writing were no longer an option, I’d find another outlet and be okay with that.

So why do I write if I don’t have to? I write because I enjoy it. It’s that simple. I like telling stories. I like starting on a path and seeing what’s around the corner. I enjoy discovering the unexpected, and I would love for readers to come along for the ride. I’m constantly inspired by the question of “What if…?”

[ML: So glad I’m not the only one who feels that way – though if I did, I think I’d get a lot more written.]

Close up of fountain pen on old letter

What one piece of advice do you wish you’d had when first starting out?

When I was in elementary school, the teachers would tell my mother that my assignments were sometimes late because I spent too much time looking around the room to see what other kids were doing.

I made that same mistake when I started writing. Sometimes it’s disguised as learning from others, which is fine, but if you pay too much attention to what other writers are doing, it’s easy to forget to work on your own stuff. Write for yourself first and don’t worry so much what everyone else is doing.

What’s your favorite romance novel of all time, and why?

This is a hard choice. I’ve read and loved a lot of books. But I’d have to say that the romance that stands out the most in my mind after all these years is Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. I read it when it was first published back in 1991 and it just struck a chord with me. The history, the emotions, the romance. It has it all. That book made me fall in love with the whole time travel genre and inspired me to write my own. Before that moment, I’d mostly read gothic romances.

chef at work

Name two things people don’t know about you.

1. I always say I’m a horrible cook (it’s been a running joke in my family since I was a kid–I was majorly inept in Home Ec class), but I’m actually not that bad. I don’t much like cooking, though, so I’m happy to have everyone believe I’m horrible at it and that’s why I don’t cook more.

2. Before I got into writing, I was an artist. I drew and painted pictures all the time. Looking back, I probably should have gone to art school and become a graphic designer, but my parents wanted me to have a “practical” career, so I went to a traditional four-year college and studied math and held a technology job for 15 years. Now I’m back in the arts, so I got here eventually.

Writer Wednesday: Meet G.E. Taylor!

GloriaWelcome back to Writer Wednesday!

Today we have romance author G.E. Taylor with us, and I’m so delighted she’s here to answer a few short questions and tell us a bit about her latest work.

So grab that tall, cool glass of lemonade (well, it’s what I’m craving right now, at least), and settle in for a cool slice of this author’s life in the middle of this hot August (at least it’s boiling here in Virginia).

What inspires you to write?

First, I love reading. After I discovered the romance books published by Mills & Boon, I read all that I could find. I fell in love with the heroes and admired the heroines. Those stories inspired me. When I write my stories, I try to build a plot and characters the reader can sink into.

Which type of romance do you love most, and why?

The genre romance that I’m most comfortable writing is contemporary. It lends itself to the time I’m living in. Dress, language, and the setting for my characters I handle through research on the internet.

What fellow romance author do you recommend reading, and why?

Without a doubt, Sandra Brown. She is a marvelous storyteller. She has a special way of writing that I’m able to get into right away. Her stories are reflective of issues happening in real life.

GETaylor_SurrenderMyHeart_1400pxA Bit About Surrender My Heart

“Jesus Chr—!” David mutters in disbelief, while swerving to avoid hitting the dog that dashed in front of his truck and the young boy who chased after him. He hears a thump, feels it, and he prays to God it isn’t the child he’d hit. The dog he can fix; he’s a veterinarian. The child was a different story. Kneeling beside the boy and his pet, David breathes a sigh of relief. The child is all right. He turns his focus on the mother, and he knew this encounter would not be his last. Her fiery tongue leaves him with no doubt that he would be held responsible for the accident, and if he’d hurt her son, there’d be no place he would be safe from her wrath. But like a moth, he was drawn to the flame.

Priscilla Bradford has one goal—to build a successful psychotherapy private practice in a short time. There is no room in her life for a relationship. She doesn’t want it. She wants no distractions and no complications. Maintaining an aloof persona, she keeps off would-be admirers. Then she runs into David Alexander, a man she cannot ignore. Despite her best efforts to stay fully committed to her goal, she is drawn to him in a way she cannot explain. That did not sit well with her, being a person who likes to be in control and in charge.

TypewriterA Bit About G.E.:

I became hooked on reading romance novels during my teen years and my attempt at writing began in high school. All of my manuscripts were mailed under my bed. Eventually, I threw out most of them. That was painful especially since I’d written them by longhand first, then typed them on my old, dependable typewriter.

In college I majored in English but ended up with a Master in Social Work from Rutgers University and a Master in Education from Seton Hall University. Though I had these different career paths, I never gave up my passion for writing or my need to read. Now I’m more committed to my writing.

I live in New Jersey with my family; enjoy soul music, like dancing and the occasional glass of wine.

Books I have published include: The Lady Mentor, Desperate Decision and Surrender My Heart.
