Writer Wednesday: Meet Josh Bertetta!

JoshBertettaHey hi howdy-ho, pardners! It’s Wednesday, and you know what that means. Yup – it’s WRITER Wednesday. Wahoowa!

Today I’m delighted to have fellow Flash Friday competitor Joshua Bertetta here to visit. Josh writes some amazing flash (I know, because when I was serving as judge, I picked one of his pieces to win! Bwah ha ha!), and is an all-around friendly and fascinating guy (how many people do you know who hold a doctorate in Mythological Studies? And why didn’t *I* pursue that in grad school?)

He’d love to hear from you in the comments, so spread the writerly love, will you?

Also: authors, I have some openings coming up for future Writer Wednesdays, starting in October. Please email me if you’d like to take part!

What inspires you to write?

Ooh, this is a tough one. I have a very broad base of interests as demonstrated on my blog. We’ve probably all heard the adage “Every picture is worth a thousand words.” Can’t we reverse it too, and say every word is worth a thousand pictures? Images (visibility not required), ideas, words, they all inspire me in one way or another. As long as something moves me in one direction or another–that is all the inspiration I need to write at least something.

ffbadgeName one interesting thing you learned in researching/writing your last book.

My WIP is a biography about the first person to ever be arrested for selling steroids. I learned there is a lot more to issues surrounding steroids than the media has presented over the past 30 or so years. In particular, I learned anabolic steroids developed in the 1950s America essentially as a Cold War weapon employed in the international sporting arena.

[ML: Holy cow, really? I need to read this book.]

Name two things people don’t know about you.

That depends on the who. As far as the flash community goes, I’d say most don’t know I am three-plus years sober and that I have an autistic son.

What one piece of advice do you wish you’d had when first starting out?

Join on-line flash fiction communities. They are a great way to meet other fantastic writers and hone your own craft by playing with genre, style, voice, etc.

[ML: I absolutely agree. Flash Friday was my first public venture into writing–and the first time I received acclaim from people other than my friends and family for fiction I’d written. I owe a lot to those confidence-boosting mentions.]

What’s Josh Up To?

clotheslinebooksI don’t have any publications to speak of, but I would invite readers to stop by my blog at joshbertetta.wordpress.com, where in addition to my flash fiction stories, I have excerpts from my first novel (for which I’m seeking publication) and essays on mythology, religion, spirituality, psychology, culture and society. A good sampling of all my little interests and inspirations.

Bio:

Josh Bertetta holds a Ph.D in Mythological Studies and teaches in the Religious Studies department at a small private university in central Texas. He is an aspiring author and a father of three boys. He loves to cook and garden.

Thanks so much for popping in, Josh! Can’t wait to feature you again when your novel is available!

Writer Wednesday: Meet Christy Carlyle

christycarlyleIt’s Writer Wednesday, baby, and we’re gonna party like it’s 1999!

Okay, maybe not, because if it were 1999, it’s unlikely y’all would be online as much as you are now, and you’d likely miss this great little interview with historical romance author Christy Carlyle. Which would be a travesty, as these little author interviews make my week, and I hope they do yours, as well.

Read on to learn more about Christy and her new release, One Scandalous Kiss (and when we say new, we mean NEW! The book debuted yesterday. Wahoo!).

What inspires you to write?

I’ve been jotting down stories since I was a kid, so I’ve been driven to write for a long time. The characters and stories in my head compel me to write, and creating the kinds of books I like to read keeps me motivated.

scandalouswagerWhich type of romance do you love most, and why?

That’s a toughy. I adore historical romance, but I also read contemporary, paranormal, and romantic suspense. If I can feel emotionally connected to the characters, get caught up in their conflict, and care about them achieving their happily ever after, I’ll read just about any kind of romance.

Name two things people don’t know about you.

I suffer from a belief I will never own enough pens. I literally own hundreds of them, and I keep finding an excuse to buy them. It’s a bit like my book-buying preoccupation.

I have a modicum of artistic skill and have provided illustrations for two children’s books.

What one piece of advice do you wish you’d had when first starting out?

Just write. I spent a lot of time worrying that my writing wasn’t good enough or not knowing if my stories were worth telling, but there’s this simple and unavoidable equation I failed to grasp. You can only hone your writing skills by writing.

And now, a bit on Christy’s latest release!

onescandalouskiss

One Scandalous Kiss:

Can one kiss change everything?

When a scheming marquess’s daughter offers her one hundred pounds to publicly kiss a nobleman, a desperate Jessamin Wright agrees. She believes the money will save her failing bookstore and finally free her from her father’s debts. But when Jess bursts into an aristocratic party and shocks the entire ton, she never expects to enjoy the outrageous embrace she shares with a grim viscount.

Lucius Crawford, Viscount Grimsby, has never met, or kissed, anyone like the beautiful suffragette who unsettles him with a single touch. He has always strived for control and avoided passion at all costs. Lucius is determined to protect his title and restore the estate he’s unexpectedly inherited, but Jess’s appearance in his life poses a threat to his plans and his heart. After a country house party brings them together once more, neither can resist temptation, and both find that one scandalous kiss just isn’t enough.

And a bit on Christy herself …

wantonwagerFueled by Pacific Northwest coffee and inspired by multiple viewings of every British costume drama she can get her hands on, Christy Carlyle writes sensual historical romance set in the Victorian era. She loves heroes who struggle against all odds and heroines who are ahead of their time. A former teacher with a degree in history, she finds there’s nothing better than being able to combine her love of the past with a die-hard belief in happy endings.

Writer Wednesday: Meet Lizzie Leaf!

Lizzie_T__Leaf_pic-smallerWhoa, baby. Can you believe it’s Wednesday again already? Where does the time go? But Wednesday is always a time for celebration around here – not only is it hump day (which really has no meaning to writer who works odd hours, you know), but it’s Writer Wednesday, the day fellow writers grace me with their presence just long enough to spill a few of their secrets (maybe) and chat about their latest release. Fun, fun for everyone.

Romance writer Lizzie T. Leaf is burning up the Writer Wednesday hot seat this week! I’m pretty sure that T. stands for terrific; she’s not only loads of fun to chat with, but she’s also written a number of romances (paranormal, contemporary, and others) for y’all to read. Win, win!

Settle in with that cup of tea (or Diet Coke, or chocolate bar, whatever your poison is) and get to know Lizzie a little better. And if you have chocolate, would you please share some?

What inspires you to write?

The stories playing through my head pushes me to put them on paper. If not, they only get louder. At times when I’m in the middle of one book another pushes its way to the front and demands at least jotting down notes.

The stories have been there since childhood. I spent a lot of time alone on the swing under the Pecan tree swinging and making up friends. Like me, the friends have grown into adults and the stories have changed, but they remain.

What one piece of advice do you wish you’d had when first starting out?

NordicHeatThere is more to writing a book than typing the end. Your journey has only started. From those two words you move on to the reality…sending the manuscript out to publishers and agents or making the decision to self-publish.

If self-publishing is the road you travel, then find an editor to catch all the things you can’t see in your baby. I relate an unedited book to…I can’t see the forest for the trees. The mind sees what it thinks should be there not necessarily what is there.

Whatever way the book ends up published, the promoting begins and that is an endless job at which most days I suck. But as you strive to get the word out, there is the next book that needs to be written and needs starting immediately. As the old saying goes…no rest for the wicked, and some days I must be very wicked the way my Muse bugs me.

Name two things people don’t know about you.

I don’t think a lot of people know I’m a Master Gardener. Love gardening and find digging in the dirt a good way to vent my frustrations. When the fruits of labor produce in late spring and summer, there is nothing better than sitting on the patio with my laptop and writing. The buzzing of the bees and songs from the birds stimulate my wee brain.

The other thing most don’t know is I’m a Certified Tour Guide and Tour Director. Though I don’t work the profession I’m always mentally critiquing the guides on travel excursions. Some are really entertaining and information, while others can put me to sleep the way the drone on about a subject.

What’s your favorite romance novel of all time, and why?

I love The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough. I fell in love with the epic romance novel then. The Meggie & Ralph experience had me in tears. [SPOILER ALERT] When he dies in her arms at the end, I sobbed. Yeah, you have to love a great angst ridden story!

And now a bit about Lizzie’s latest release:

DeadAwake_300x450Lizzie T. Leaf books have heat, but humor comes into play too.

DEAD Awake is re-releasing at Decadent Publishing and the pre-sale is on now.

Here’s the story:

Socialite Deb Stein lives a life of luxury until she takes the hunk dressed as a vampire to her bed. When she wakes up one of the living dead, she’s pissed-off. To complicate matters more, she has to find a new identity since everyone thinks she dead. Plus, if she’s dead, she can’t touch her trust fund, and that means she has to work! How can someone who has never held a job find one?

And her social life is in the tank. Her new friends are a street guy called Rat and fellow strippers at the dive where she works. If she ever sees Aaron Lowell again, she’ll put a stake in his heart.

Aaron Lowell feels guilty he took his mentor’s advice and left town after taking the sexy socialite into the undead world. Concerned, he returns to check on her and discovers she’s become a stripper—and not a very happy one when she sees him. But she’s still hot, and he can’t stay away from her, even if their meetings are explosive.

Can two vampires move beyond anger, combined with a strong sexual attraction, to find the kind of love they both crave?

Find it here, and on Amazon Kindle.

Writer Wednesday: Meet Sydney Scrogham!

Sydney ScroghamIt’s Wednesday, and you know what that means – it’s Writer Wednesday! Today I’m thrilled to have fellow Shenandoah Valley Writers author Sydney Scrogham join me. Sydney’s debut YA fantasy novel, Chase, hit the shelves August 1st, so this seemed the perfect time to get to know her and her work a little bit better.

Sydney doesn’t do things half-measure, so she decided to answer all seven questions I threw at her, rather than just picking a few. Woot! More for us to enjoy, so sit back, relax, and hang out with us for a few moments.

What inspires you to write?

Memories, and more specifically, heartbreak. Nothing makes me want to write more than being in pain. That sounds awful, doesn’t it? But when life doesn’t deliver happy endings all the time, rewriting happy endings in a story is healing for me.

Which type of romance do you love most, and why?

Regular guy and girl with NO triangles or squares or anything else with more sides. I like to see strong personalities become something better when they’re together. It makes the chemistry sizzle off the page for me.

Name two things people don’t know about you:

I met my real-life version of Chase while I was in college, long after I’d finished writing the first draft. You bet I was shocked (and no, he wasn’t interested in dating…). Second, as more of a writer’s life thing, my favorite position for writing is lying on my tummy in front of my laptop.

What fellow romance author do you recommend reading, and why?

Susan May Warren. I nabbed an ARC of When I Fall In Love and I was hooked from chapter one. Warren took the cheese out of Christian romance for me – the hero actually said, “I want to make babies with you.” (I was cheering – I hate it when Christian romance isn’t done well, but Warren nabs it in the Christiansen Family Series.) And those were the most realistic characters I’d seen in years.

What one piece of advice do you wish you’d had when first starting out?

Don’t take the first deal that’s offered to you. Figure out what you want, and don’t compromise anything until you get it.

What’s your favorite romance novel of all time, and why?

Hm… This doesn’t qualify as a romance, technically, but the relationship between Sean and Puck in The Scorpio Races (MaggieStiefvater) is STILL on my mind months after I’ve read the book.

Chase Cover Sydney ScroghamAnd now . . . Chase

Two worlds will collide under one reigning Promise.

He’s chosen to die.
She’s destined for Snix skin.

Financial strain from her mom’s lost job means Lauren has to sell her horse.  In a desperate attempt to keep her beloved animal, Lauren pursues an escaped genetic experiment worth a ten thousand dollar reward—a bright red horse.

With the red horse in sight, Lauren disappears into Agalrae and comes face-to-face with Chase, a man raised by Alicorns. Lauren wants to return home, but the Snix, Chase’s enemy since birth, has other plans. The Snix confronts Lauren with an ultimatum:  Kill Chase for ten times the red horse’s reward money, or sacrifice the lives of her mother and horse.

Forced to stay in Agalrae until she decides, Lauren wrestles with possible outcomes.  But she can’t hide the truth from Chase forever.

When destiny splits, which path do you follow?

Find Chase here:

Sydney Scrogham has been a horse owner writing novels on the side for the past ten years. She actively writes for Flash! Friday and Porsche Club of America e-Break News. When she isn’t writing, Sydney can be found at the barn with her horse, Snowdy. Apart from Snowdy, Sydney’s inspiration for writing includes spending time with God, watching ABC’s Castle or Marvel movies, Breyer model horses, Bionicle Legos, and taking long walks in the middle of nowhere.  Sydney’s driving passion is to see people revive and chase after their dreams.

Woot! Congratulations on your new release, Sydney, and thanks so much for joining us!

Writer Wednesday: Meet Susan Scott Shelley

susanscottshelleyWellllll-come to Writer Wednesday! I really love this day of the week, don’t you? Almost to the weekend (do weekends matter anymore when one is a writer?), and you get to learn about a wonderful author, to boot. What’s not to love?

This week, Susan Scott Shelley joins us. Ms. Shelley is an award-winning author of contemporary romance who, in her own words, “spends her days writing about tough heroes, smart heroines, and love being the strongest magic there is. Her favorite things include running, sports, hard rock and old Hollywood movies. She lives in Philadelphia with her very own Superhero, and believes life should be lived with laughter, enthusiasm, and a sense of wonder.”

Don’t you just want to hang out with her for a day? I do, but I’ll have to settle for this quickie of an interview. And here we go!

What inspires you to write?

The stories that keep popping into my head demand it! I like writing about how falling in love changes people. I love exploring it, and seeing what odds they’ll need to overcome in order to let love win.

Name one interesting thing you learned in researching/writing your last book.

In researching for my Boys of Summer series, I’ve learned *so* much about the rules of the game, the intricate details, and the psychology of baseball. I’m a huge sports fan. Hockey was my first love, followed by football, and then baseball. Combining something I truly love into the stories I’m writing is so much fun.

Name two things people don’t know about you.

I’m a professional voiceover artist. And, I have an affinity for all things Scottish. I also read the newspaper comics every morning (because you should start off your day with a laugh!) and I have a mild (okay, maybe more than mild…) addiction to coffee and eye makeup.

Rekindled-Cover

Check Out Rekindled – Book 1 in the Boys of Summer series

Actress Gemma Norwood and professional baseball player Adam Hudson are thrown together four years after a gut-wrenching break-up. Far away from the glitter of Hollywood and the trappings that accompany a high-profile, major league star, they meet in the small town in the Catskills where they first fell in love.

Adam, sidelined by an injury that’s left him questioning whether he can continue to play, longs to return to the sport he loves and Gemma, weary of small roles in low-budget films, isn’t sure if her heart still lies in making movies. After one kiss, rekindling their relationship is all that matters.

But as the start of baseball season draws near, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Gemma threatens to tear them apart again. The warm glow of a happily-ever-after seems as impossible as starting a fire in a snowstorm.
