A Man of Character: One Week In & a Great Big THANK YOU!

A Man of Character Cover Margaret LockeWait, what? It’s been a full week since A Man of Character debuted? I can hardly believe it.

Thank you for the overwhelmingly positive response I’ve received! I’ve shed more than one tear in the last seven days, but luckily they’ve all been happy tears.

Thank you everyone who’s bought the book, everyone who’s reading the book, and to everyone who’s taken the time to leave a review on Amazon or GoodReads.

Y’all rock.

Here’s a sampling of what I’ve heard this week:

“Mrs. Locke, I just finished your novel, “A Man of Character.” I just wanted you to know that it was one of the best books that I have read this year. I look forward to reading Eliza’s story, and I hope you will write William’s story as well. Thanks for the pleasure of your words.”

“Loved the story. I read way past my bedtime. It was an interesting and thought-provoking romance. Looking forward to more books from this author.”

“I don’t usually read romances, but I couldn’t quit reading this one. It arrived in the mail late Thursday, and I finished it Friday morning. This novel has a clever premise, cool characters, a neat twist toward the end (a perfect set-up for the sequel), and a great sense of humor. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and can’t wait for Margaret Locke’s next work.”

“I loved it! This fun and thought-provoking romance novel offers a great balance of comedic elements, sweetness, and sizzle. Throw in a handful of handsome eligible men, a touch of magic, and journey of self-discovery, and you have a wonderful story. The book was a joy to read, both for the creative content and craft (it is very well-edited and formatted — the author obviously knows her stuff and invested the time necessary to develop an excellent product). I am very impressed and am looking forward to the next book! (I hope it’s about Eliza. I loved her character!)”

Margaret Locke A Man of CharacterThose are words that feed the writer’s soul – especially a nervous Nellie newbie like me!

I hope you’ll continue to help me spread the word about A Man of Character, whether through sharing about it on Facebook, tweeting about it, or good, old-fashioned telling someone about it directly. Word-of-mouth is everything in the book world, and something on which indie authors are especially dependent.

Thank you again, from the bottom of my romance writer’s heart. You know how to make a girl feel special!

Baa Baa, Black Sheep: On Writing Indie Romance

Romance and its authors have garnered lots of publicity recently, especially in light of Laurie Kahn’s recent (and excellent) documentary, Love Between The Covers. Numerous articles are swirling around the internet, refuting many of the myths about romance novels and the people who write them. Here’s just a sampling:

I love that people are challenging the notion that romance is lesser, that romance writing is simplistic, that romance is dismissible. Those of us within the community have long known those things are false, of course.

The same can be said of indie publishing: its image is transforming from consisting of only poorly written, barely edited trash thrown up on the internet, to being a viable alternative to traditional publishing, featuring numerous talented, cutting edge authors. Many indie romance authors have become certified rock stars in the genre, including Courtney Milan, Bella Andre, Katy Regnery . . . I could name many more.

But as a newbie indie romance author, I’m suddenly realizing what an uphill battle I have to get people to take me seriously: not fellow romance authors, perhaps (although of course I need to prove myself to them, as well), but friends, acquaintances, and anybody not tuned in to the romance and indie communities.

I know this, because I’ve been talking–online and in person–about my debut novel, A Man of Character, which hits the market May 26th. People are excited for me, and I’m so grateful for that. But several times, after friends and acquaintances asked me what I’m writing and/or who’s publishing it, their expressions changed, their faces fell or took on a humoring expression, when I replied, “romance, and I’m indie publishing.”

Writing romance is dubious enough, apparently–add indie to it, and you’re really not welcome at the table.

I could be misreading their reactions. I could be projecting my own self-doubts and fears as this book goes public. Yes, I’m nervous. Yes, I realize there will be people who don’t like my book. Yes, I’m sure I can (and will) improve my writing as I continue down this career path. And that’s OK. Because that’s what it is to me: a career path.

Don’t hand me that black sheep fleece, because I won’t wear it.

I am a writer. I write romance, and I love it. I’m an indie author, and proud of it.

Thank to you everyone who’s supporting me, encouraging me, and cheering me on. Thank you to my critique group, to my beta readers, and to my editor, Tessa Shapcott: all of you helped shape A Man of Character into what it is–a book I’m thrilled to claim as my own. Thank you to my fellow romance authors, an amazingly welcoming group of women (and men) willing to provide guidance, advice, and valuable insider information to newbies following in their footsteps. .

And thank you to everyone who’s purchased A Man of Character, or will purchase it–your willingness to take a chance on a debut author means the world to me.

Writer Wednesday: Meet April Holthaus

Welcome to Writer Wednesday! This week we bring you April Holthaus, author of Scottish Historical Romances. April lives in Minnesota with her husband and son. When she’s not working, writing or taking care of the baby, she loves being outdoors and going to the cabin.

She joined me today to share a little about her writerly self:

Which type of romance do you love most, and why?

I love Historical/Medieval Era romance. To me, I find that era to be the most romantic era to read and write. Yes, life was hard and wars broke out constantly, but the characters I love are those who fight for honor and passion and have the strength to overcome hardships.

What’s your favorite romance novel of all time, and why?

My favorite romance novel is Tempted by a Highlander Warrior by Michelle Willingham. I have never read a book with so much passion, love and devotion.

What fellow romance author do you recommend reading, and why?

I would highly recommend Vonda Sinclair. Each of her Highland Romance stories weaves a tale of heroism, love and compassion. The heroes are unforgettable. Fierce yet passionate.

Writer Wednesday: Meet Cheri Allan

Author Cheri AllanWelcome to Writer Wednesday! Today I’m delighted to host Cheri Allan, author of hopeful, humorous contemporary romances. Her newest book, All or Nothing, is out today!

Here she shares with us a little about her writing life:

What inspires you to write?

They call it ‘falling in love’ for a reason. People usually do it gracelessly, hurling themselves forward in messy, humiliating, stumbling spectacles of ardor. I LOVE THIS about love. I adore the fact that the most transformative experience on earth is so, incredibly, wonderfully awkward and, well, human. I want to experience that process again and again with my characters, because what is more relatable and what makes us feel less alone than to watch someone else bumble their way toward happiness?

What one piece of advice do you wish you’d had when first starting out?

Never stop moving forward. I spent too much time waiting on others over the years: waiting on contest results; waiting on editors and agents; waiting on inspiration to strike. The fact is, no one wants your success more than you, and no one else can tell your stories. No matter what, keep moving forward; whether it’s taking a class, doing free-writing, sending pages to a critique partner or just getting that next cup of coffee. Inertia is a powerful force, so make it work for you and not against you.

What fellow romance author do you recommend reading, and why?

It’s no secret I have a major girl-crush on Kristan Higgins. Her books never fail to make me alternately snort through my nose with laughter and weep into my dog’s fur like I’ve just finished Where a Red Fern Grows. She is brilliance on a stick with her quirky characters, relatable small-town dynamics and a writer’s voice that makes you feel you’re sitting down for coffee with the most entertaining of friends. She cannot ever write fast enough, and if I ever heard she’d read and liked one of my books (!!!), I’d squeal like a 12 year-old at a Taylor Swift concert. Then I’d faint. You are forewarned.

All or Nothing CoverWant to know more about All or Nothing?

When finding Mrs. Right goes oh, so, wrong…

Self-made tech millionaire Ian McIntyre has suffered through a reality dating show only to return home to idyllic Sugar Falls, New Hampshire, empty-handed, swarmed by paparazzi, and hounded by a Hollywood producer determined to deliver a Happily Ever After. But then his home is invaded by a sexy, snarky local staging it for the season finale, and Ian finds himself more interested in the cute and scrappy hometown girl dusting off his action figures than the audience’s favorite southern belle.

Auto mechanic Bailey Adams grew up on the wrong side of the tracks and is struggling to patch together enough odd jobs to buy a garage of her own. When the Golden Boy of Sugar Falls entangles her in his disastrous season of Happily Ever After, they both discover that some long-held dreams are only as ‘real’ as ‘reality’ TV. Now, with the deal on her dream garage in jeopardy and her unlikely love affair with America’s favorite geeky hunk playing out on national TV, Bailey must decide if she’s willing to risk it all for love… or be left with nothing.

Craving more already? Here’s an excerpt:

“Then take off your coat and avoid hypothermia.”

Her bottom lip jutted out. “You first.”

He shrugged out of his parka and hung it on a hook by the door, raising one eyebrow as he did so.

She took another long drink then tugged her coat off and hung it next to his. Melting snow dripped onto the floorboards beneath it. Stubborn woman.

“Your lovely flannel shirt is also soaked,” he said.

“Yeah, like I’m falling for that.”

“Don’t flatter yourself. I’ve seen lumberjacks make flannel sexier than you do.”

He didn’t know why he was goading her, but he felt on edge… wet, chilled and restless.

“Like you could resist me if I were standing naked in front of you,” she said.

She paused, as if she weren’t sure how those words came to be floating in the air between them. But there they were, raining down over him like hot sparks. Heat flooded through him, and he could feel his blood pumping. He watched her, the air crackling with awareness. The fire in the stove popped and something tumbled inside. His heart thudded in his chest at the word ‘naked.’

“Try me,” he finally said.

About Cheri

Cheri Allan writes humorous, hopeful contemporary romances. She lives in a charming fixer-upper in rural New Hampshire with her husband, two children, two dogs, four cats and an excessive amount of optimism. She’s a firm believer in do-it-yourself, new beginnings and happily-ever-afters, so after years of wearing suits, she’s grateful to finally put her English degree to good use writing romance. When not writing, you might find her whizzing down the slopes of a nearby mountain or inadvertently killing perennials in her garden.

Writer Wednesday: Meet Tamara Shoemaker

Tamara ShoemakerWoo hoo! Today I welcome personal friend and writer extraordinaire Tamara Shoemaker! Tamara and I have known each other only a year, but I swear I can’t remember life without her. She’s a hoot, y’all.

Tamara’s not technically a romance writer (I’m still trying to lure her over), but there’s plenty of romantic tension laced throughout her fantasy and mystery books. I know, because I’ve read them – and was a beta reader for Soul Survivor, about which you’ll read below. And which you should definitely preorder, because it’s good.

So without further ado, here’s Tamara. Or at least three things about Tamara.

Name two things people don’t know about you.

1.) I’m afraid this secret may have leaked out, but I’ll make it official here: I’m extremely claustrophobic, so I can’t read books having to do with space (no oxygen) or underwater adventures (same problem). Also, closets bother me. And thick blankets. And corsets.

BREATHE!

2.) I love cooked spinach but only if I smother it in mayonnaise. I’ve taught my kids to love it, too. My husband thinks I’m an alien from Planet Gross Things (but there I go talking about space).

BREATHE!

Name one interesting thing you learned in researching/writing your last book.

I got to discover some of the intricacies of what a psychotic break looks like. It was fascinating delving into the mind’s psyche and breaking it down piece by piece, and then with a few keystrokes, melting reason and logic into a few brilliant, broken puddles. I had way too much fun with that.

*Note: I should make it clear that I am not currently, nor have I ever, suffered from a psychotic break.

What one piece of advice do you wish you’d had when you were first starting out?

I love stories with romance threaded through them, and so of course, I twist romance into all my books. In my first book, my two characters played a romance that was flat as cardboard—no romantic tension, no play in their interaction with each other. They could have been one person. It wasn’t until later (with loads more experience under my belt) that I figured out that the romance in a story is just as important as the plot itself. So that means lots of time planning the nuances, the ups, the downs, the frustrations, the joys, but always, ALWAYS, maintaining the fine balance of ROMANTIC TENSION.

Soul Survivor Tamara ShoemakerPreorder Soul Survivor today!

Soul Survivor is my latest release, a Christian mystery/suspense book set in the Blue Ridge mountains around Asheville, NC (where I grew up). It features Eden Grey, a young woman who attempts to flee her past and the killer it brings by taking shelter in a renovated manor run by her old high school flame. As tensions mount, Eden wonders who she can trust, whether seeming friends or hidden enemies. Will she escape with her life? And yes, of course, there’s romance. 🙂

Soul Survivor is available right now for pre-order, and will hard-release on May 1, 2015. Check out the link for more info: http://booklaunch.io/route11publications/54f9939d66e3bff92b26b195

Thanks, Tamara! I’m so glad you could join us.
