Writer Wednesday: Meet Kathleen Duhamel!

DuhamelPut on those party hats! It’s #WriterWednesday!

Today we get to learn about Kathleen Duhamel, writer of romance featuring older characters with youthful personalities, and fellow member of the Virginia Romance Writers. Hooray!

She gives us insights into her own writing life, and shares about her new novel, Deeper, which debuts March 20th.

Excited? I am! Here we go… 🙂

What inspires you to write?

deepblueI am motivated by the people in my life. In particular, my husband of 15 years, Tom, whose devotion and commitment to my writing career have made it possible.

I’m inspired by my BFF Diane, who makes the world a better place every day. She was the prototype for the character of Denise Hrivnak in my Deep Blue novels.

Mostly, I’m inspired by love itself.

Tom and I recently attended the wedding of a couple we know who’ve been through a long and circuitous journey to matrimony, and I was reminded once again of what a hopeful event a wedding can be. We go into marriage knowing there’s a 50 per cent chance it will fail, but we’re still winning to take an emotional risk for love.

Which type of romance do you love most, and why?

I write and love contemporary romance, and my work features older characters with youthful personalities. I enjoy writing about present-day situations (and I’m far too lazy to do the research needed for historical romance).

Name one interesting thing you learned in researching/writing your last book:

FameOne of my characters works for an organization whose mission is to end childhood hunger. I learned that there are at least 16 million children who go to bed hungry every night in the United States. Personally, I find this situation inexcusable in a country that has so many resources. It’s shameful.

Name two things people don’t know about you:

I live in Virginia now, but I spent 30 years in Colorado where I hiked, biked, fished, camped and snowshoed. Someday I hope to return.

I began my career as a newspaper reporter and editor. That past work experience probably has shaped my writing style more than anything else. My writing is pretty straightforward. I try not to bury my readers with lengthy descriptions that stop the flow of the story.

What one piece of advice do you wish you’d had when first starting out?

sunset in heart handsThe same piece of advice someone recently told me: “Trust your gift.” Don’t give up, no matter what.

What’s your favorite romance novel of all time, and why?

Valley of the Dolls, by Jacqueline Susann.

Even though it was written about 50 years ago, the themes explored by the author are still relevant today: marriage vs. independence, the high personal cost of fame and the temptation of drugs.

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000040_00070]A Bit on Deeper, Kathleen’s novel debuting March 20th:

Secrets of the past seldom stay buried forever…

Now married to the love of her life, landscape artist Claire Martin’s peaceful world is rocked by an unexpected revelation that crushes her dreams of the future and causes her to question everything she thought she knew about her famous husband, legendary singer Robert Silver of the band Deep Blue.

Although Robert is now clean and sober, and embarking on a new opportunity with his musical partner Art Hoffman, the consequences of one night long ago fracture his family and threaten his marriage to the woman who loves him like no one else.

Will love survive, or will career pressures, family turmoil and the ever-present specter of the paparazzi destroy their new life together?

Writer Wednesday: Meet Julieann Dove!

View More: http://nataliejaynephotography.pass.us/julieThat’s right! It’s Writer Wednesday! Time to PAR-TAY!

And by party, I mean read this whole interview, because learning about authors is way cool.

The weather is stunningly gorgeous here in Virginia today – a true spring masterpiece. I hope you can say the same wherever you are. Speaking of Virginia, I’m delighted to have fellow Virginian and romance author Julieann Dove with us today, sharing about her life as a writer, and giving us a glimpse into her newest book, Waking Amy!

Welcome, Julieann! And away we go…

Business concept. keyboard and crumpled paper on table. What one piece of advice do you wish you’d had when first starting out?

I would’ve liked to be told that no matter what skill set I thought I had, or how I might’ve thought my imagination was good…go take at least two or three writing workshops before submitting anything to an agent. Let’s face it, you get one chance to make an impression, and although I got my fair share of requests, it always came back to a craft problem that enabled me from getting representation.

What’s your favorite romance novel of all time, and why?

Wuthering Heights. I can feel the love Heathcliff had for Catherine. Right down to my bones. The way he wanted her to haunt him when she died. There was such passion between these two characters. I never tire of reading it!

MusicButterflyWhat inspires you to write?

Music. I can hear a song and write a novel around the lyrics. I wrote my first novel from listening to the song Gravity, by Sara Bareilles. I even titled it “Gravity!” I’ve since changed the title, but I won an award for it, and I have the certificate with the original title. That was neat. 🙂

And now, a bit on Waking Amy:

Waking Amy DigitalAmy Whitfield is blindsided when she comes home and finds a note on the fridge from her husband, Wesley, stating that after four years of marriage, he’s leaving her. Amy was in the midst of trying to spice things up, to bring life back to their boring marriage. It seems now that she was too late.

As Amy sits with her head between her knees, trying to figure out what to do next, a call comes from Mercer General Hospital. The ER nurse is telling Amy’s answering machine that Wesley has been in a car accident.

When Amy arrives at the hospital, she finds her husband in a coma. The doctors say there is no sign of brain damage, and Wesley will eventually wake up. Relieved, Amy sees this as her second chance: the chance to get it right this time. To channel the girl Wesley won’t leave when he regains consciousness… She just needs some help to pull it off. After all, she was voted girl most likely to die a virgin in high school.

Amy would never figure on getting that help from Mark Reilly…Wesley’s doctor! He’s a non-committer, too-cute-for-his-own-good bachelor, and completely the guy Amy begins falling for. It’s a race against time to see who wakes up first—Amy or her husband.

A bit about Julieann Dove:

Passports to world travel Julieann lives in Virginia, yet longs to live everywhere else. It doesn’t come as a surprise that along with her gypsy soul, comes an active imagination. That’s why she loves to write and invent worlds and people, so that she can formulate their happily ever after. Hobbies include cooking new recipes, sewing, and spending time with her cute boyfriend/husband and five fabulous children. Vacations happen in Nantucket or the Carolina beaches—anywhere there is inspiration for her next book. One day she hopes to travel to Italy, drive one of those little cars around the countryside, and speak the language fluently!

Thanks so much for joining us, Julieann! Wishing you great success with Waking Amy!

Writer Wednesday: Meet Elisabeth Joye!

Photo of the author by SJMacky Photography

Psst. It’s Dr. Seuss’s birthday. It’s also MY birthday.

So it’s with great celebratory fervor, possibly fueled by an overconsumption of carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, that I bring you Elisabeth Joye as today’s Writer Wednesday guest.

Elisabeth writes erotic romance, and is here to, ah, expose a little about herself, and her latest work, Invisible Ink. 🙂

What inspires you to write?

I was inspired to write Invisible Ink by my love of going to concerts…and my love of a specific rock star in particular. My number one rule in writing the book was for the scenes themselves to turn ME on, so I guess you could say that is another of my inspirations. If I wasn’t turned on, it didn’t make it in the book.

Which type of romance do you love most, and why?

I like things dirty…but not pornographic. I write in the erotic romance genre, and that’s what I most love to read. More specifically, I like romance that surprises me and doesn’t follow the typical formula. I also love an alpha, not a nice guy.

Name two things people don’t know about you:

As a reporter, I once slept on the floor of a city manager’s office during a hurricane in Florida. I also had one of my first jobs fitting bras at Victoria’s Secret.

What one piece of advice do you wish you’d had when first starting out?

Self-publishing is mostly about self-promotion, and it’s a lot of work. But it’s worth it. Don’t worry about submitting your work to a traditional publisher or even one of the indie romance publishers. Chances are not great you will get accepted — especially if you write short stories or novellas. Instead, just bite the bullet, find an editor and self-publish. Don’t waste time waiting for rejection letters.

And now, a bit on Invisible Ink:

invisibleinkLex has never felt more exposed.

She has just allowed Jake Reed, the lead singer of rock band Inkjet, to undress her and tie her to a chair backstage after a show, only to have him leave to go sign autographs.

It is the start of a dark, obsessive relationship that will lead Lex, a 20-something public relations professional from L.A., to lose herself almost entirely as she struggles to break through her sexual boundaries without falling in love with Jake, an intimidatingly gorgeous Hollywood actor/rock star who closely guards his emotions.

What starts as a series of casual hookups ends up a powerful addiction that will push Lex past all her sexual boundaries as Jake moves repeatedly in and out of her life, making few promises along the way. Lex fights to keep a sense of herself while she succumbs to Jake’s glamorous world and his irresistible allure.

Author Bio:

writingElisabeth Joye used to write about Congress. Now, she writes about sex. A former political journalist, she’s wanted to write a romance novel since she was 12 and finally found the inspiration to do it by incorporating her love of concerts and musicians. Invisible Ink is her first self-published novella.

Elisabeth’s philosophy when writing romance is simple – she writes what she thinks is hot and hopes others will, too. She wants to create characters who speak, act and fall in love like real people with issues, flaws and fears. But, above all, the sex is got to be hot.

When she’s not writing, Elisabeth is a stay-at-home mom to her four-year-old son. She loves fangirling her favorite celebrities and reading true crime obsessively. She didn’t have a smartphone until 2013 and now couldn’t live without social media and text messaging. She lives in the Midwest with her husband and family.

Writer Wednesday: Meet TP Keane!

tpkeaneWelcome to the final February Writer Wednesday!

I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to spring weather here in Virginia. Luckily, we have fantasy author TP Keane with us today to beat those winter doldrums and send us off into her rich fantasy worlds. Wahoo!

So settle in with a good cuppa, or a donut, and if you have any chocolate, will you send it my way? Take it away, TP!

What inspires you to write?

I’m inspired by the world around me. There are no characters so bold or loud as the ones around us. They are the inspiration behind a lot of my characters and I need only a glance into their lives. From the way an eccentric woman tilts a pink over-feathered hat, to the way a child would glare at a cute puppy for stealing his ice-cream. All of these things offer me fodder for my vernacular fornication.

Name one interesting thing you learned in researching/writing your last book:

Fairy Tree In Mystic ForestBeing a fantasy novel, there are a lot of pre-determined expectations from fantasy readers. And as much as I wanted it to be “my” book, I was aware that if I ever wanted to write another book, one that would be appreciated by more than just me, I would have to concede certain things. Critical thinking and an understanding of the psychology of people, is a skill authors learn from the get-go. But writing in fantasy, I had to create a new world and that world had to make sense.

What one piece of advice do you wish you’d had when first starting out?

Read more about how to write. Absorb everything you’re told, take criticism with a pinch of salt, but take it nonetheless.

And now, The Paladins of Naretia

3D The Paladins smallOlórin’s adopted son, Aramus, is a creature unlike any in the kingdom of Naretia. He is feared by all, and holds a darkness inside that is said will end all life by his eighteenth birthday. Olórin must scour the kingdom for godly ingredients to make a potion for Aramus that will save them all. He is hoping his son’s human side will prevail over the rising darkness within him, for long enough to outrun their enemies.

But Aramus’s real father, the dark God Dantet, desires his son’s powers so he might, once again, walk on mortal soil. His legion of dark creatures follow Olórin and Aramus at every turn, trying to kill them. Dantet’s army, however, is not the only one wanting Aramus dead. Something, or someone, changes fate’s hand. Neither Dantet, nor Olórin, can see the terrible future that threatens them all. Even the traitors within the wizard caste are blind to what is coming.

But it is coming.

Writer Wednesday: Meet Linda O’Connor!

Linda O'Connor authorAnd…we’re back! After an unintentional one-week hiatus (thanks a LOT, gallbladder), #WriterWednesday returns, and we’ve got Linda O’Connor with us today. Thank you, Linda, for understanding why we postponed your interview from last week to this one – while being on Percocet has its benefits, recovering from surgery wasn’t exactly conducive to drafting a coherent post for you. And coherency is what we writers are all about, right?

Linda’s philosophy is “Laugh every day. Love every minute.” Now that’s something I can get behind. So settle in and read on to learn a bit more about Linda and her writing!

What inspires you to write?

Working with young adults! I’m a physician and I had the idea to try to incorporate medical advice into a romance novel. There were some basics I thought patients should know – mental health symptoms, birth control myths, how to take ownership of their health. I thought hey, if David Chilton of The Wealthy Barber fame can dole out financial advice in a barbershop, maybe I could dole out medical advice in a romance novel. I hoped it would be a little bit more appealing that the myriad of educational posters in my office! I’m really enjoying using my medical knowledge in a new way. I hope that readers will laugh, relax, enjoy the stories I’ve written, and maybe learn something too!

What type of romance do you love most, and why?

I’m usually reading for relaxation, so my favourite stories are contemporary romance with happily-ever-after endings, and romantic comedies that make me laugh. Because I’ve read so widely in this genre, it’s also the easiest to write. Plus it’s fun to be in a romantic comedy headspace all the hours that I spend writing.

Name one interesting thing you learned in researching/writing your last book:

Before I started writing I heard this advice: Write what you know. I didn’t appreciate how easy it was for me to write authentically about medical characters until I wrote about Rip, a police officer in Perfectly Planned (Book 3 in the Perfectly Series). I had so many questions about the small details. Luckily, I have a friend who patiently answered all of my questions – I loved learning the behind-the-scenes details of how the Tactics and Rescue Unit worked. Wow – they’re very brave! But going through that I truly appreciated how effortlessly I could bring an accurate medical feel to my writing.

And now a bit on Perfectly Planned:

PerfectlyPlannedFlat2_850She’s got it all Perfectly Planned . . .

Chloe Keay is on the hunt for the perfect sperm donor, but who knew it would be this hard? So many things to consider in a father – sure height and hair color are important, but what about the real issues. How does he feel about bagpipe music? Does he buy the extended warranty? Skittles or M&Ms? She doesn’t want an average Joe. She’s narrowed it down to two candidates and has the perfect plan to pick the heir and the spare.

Staff Sergeant Rip Logan, head of the elite Tactics and Rescue Unit, has a gut feeling that Chloe Keay is trouble. She’s a sexy little spark plug who radiates innocence, but it doesn’t jibe with her suspicious behavior and probing questions. The fact that he’s attracted irritates him. What exactly is she after? And should he go with his gut or follow his heart?

Planning for love – what could possibly go wrong?

A Bit About Linda:

writingLinda O’Connor started writing a few years ago when she needed a creative outlet other than subtly rearranging the displays at HomeSense. It turns out she loved writing romantic comedies and has a few more stories to tell. When not writing, she’s a physician (well, even when she is writing she’s a physician and it shows up in her stories) but otherwise she’s working at an Urgent Care Clinic or even better, dancing in a Zumba class (where they say there are no mistakes, only unexpected solos). Laugh every day. Love every minute.

Thanks so much, Linda! It was a pleasure to have you with us.
